AI Search Optimization for Plumbers
A plumbing company is easier for AI assistants and agents to recommend when its website says in plain text which jobs it takes, which towns it covers, when it answers emergency calls and which state license it holds, when its Google listing says the same, and when a customer can book a repair or request a water heater estimate online.
Facts on this page last checked 2026-10-17.
What your customers ask AI
Examples of what a customer might ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity when they need a plumbing company:
- “My basement drain is backing up. Which plumbers near me can come out tonight?”
- “Find a licensed plumber who can replace my gas water heater this week, and tell me roughly what it costs.”
- “Who repipes older houses near me, and will they give me a written estimate first?”
- “Is this plumbing company licensed in my state, and whose license is it working under?”
- “Book a plumber for Saturday morning to fix a running toilet and a dripping kitchen faucet.”
- “Which local plumbers install WaterSense toilets, and does my water utility offer a rebate?”
The action that matters
Call about an emergency, book a repair or request an estimate
A plumbing company gets two kinds of request, and its website has to serve both: the emergency (a burst pipe, a sewer backup, a leaking water heater, no hot water) and the planned job (a slow drain, a new faucet, an estimate for a water heater or a whole-house repipe).
What an AI assistant checks first
- Whether you answer emergency calls right now
- Whether you go to the customer's street
- What an after-hours visit costs
What the request needs
- The job
- The address or zip code
- A few words about the problem
- An optional photo
- A preferred time
- A text or email confirmation that it arrived
What to say on your website
- Emergency hours near the top of every page
- The towns you will drive to after dark
- Your phone number, written out so it can be tapped
What AI agents can already do for your customers
Being found is the first step. Once an agent reaches a plumbing company, these are the things it can already do for the customer it works for, each from the company's own announcement and marked live, rolling out or announced.
Google AI Mode
liveAI Mode can look into plumbing and other home services for a signed-in customer, checking prices and when a company can come, and Google may phone a plumber whose details are missing online.
What you need: Your emergency hours, after-hours rate and service call fee published as text.

Yelp Assistant
liveA homeowner's request through Yelp's assistant reaches a pro's inbox as a quote request, and if that pro uses Calendly, the homeowner can then book a slot straight from the pro's calendar.
What you need: Plumbing categories and service area kept current on Yelp, and a quick reply to every quote request.
Thumbtack in ChatGPT and Claude
liveThumbtack's plugin in ChatGPT, and since April 2026 its integration in Claude for US users, let people ask about home repairs and get matched with local pros, plumbers among them, without leaving the chat.
What you need: If you take Thumbtack jobs, a complete profile with each plumbing service, your prices and your coverage area.

ChatGPT (cloud browser)
rolling outIn ChatGPT Work, on paid plans other than Go and in supported regions, ChatGPT's cloud browser can go to a plumber's website and fill in the booking or estimate form for a customer.
What you need: A short form that works for software as well as people, with a confirmation the customer can see.
Claude (Chrome and built-in browser)
liveOn paid Claude plans, with Claude in Chrome or the built-in browser in the Cowork desktop app, Claude can open a plumber's site, type out the problem and fill in the booking form, pausing before any purchase.
What you need: A form that asks only for what the job needs, so an agent filling it in does not stall on optional fields.

How we get you ready
Set up on the platforms agents already use
Agents act through your own website and through the booking, ordering and quote platforms your trade uses. We make sure your business is listed, current and easy to act on wherever that fits how you work, and that your website and listings say the same thing.
A connector of your own, where it fits
When your bookings, quotes or orders run on your own systems, we can build a connector on your website using MCP, an open standard many AI assistants use to connect to outside tools, so an assistant that has added your connector can check availability or send a request directly instead of filling in a form.
Where AI reads about plumbers
Your website is one source. AI assistants also draw on what other sites say about you, so these are worth keeping complete and consistent.
Google Business Profile
The listing that shows your plumbing company on Google Search and Maps. When you add services, Google offers ready-made options for plumbing businesses, such as installing a faucet or repairing a toilet, and you can add custom services for the rest, like sewer line repair or tankless water heater installs, each with a description and a price. Pick every job you really do, set regular and holiday hours, and keep the job names the same as on your website.

Google Local Services Ads
Paid listings shown prominently in Google Search, and plumbers are one of the categories Google offers them for. A homeowner can call you, send a message or schedule a booking straight from the ad, and you pay for leads related to the services you offer. Google says a provider who regularly misses calls or messages may see its ad ranking affected, so send these leads to whoever is on call. Profiles that pass Google's screening carry the Google Verified badge.

PHCC Find a Contractor
The Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors National Association runs a public search on its own website: a homeowner enters a zip code and sees member companies in their state, closest first, each with a website and phone number. If you are a PHCC member, check that the company name, phone number and web address it shows match your Google listing and your own site.

Water heater makers' installer locators
Water heater brands point homeowners to installers through locators on their own websites. A. O. Smith's map-based locator lists nearby plumbing contractors; a contractor gets listed by joining its free Contractor Rewards program and redeeming install codes, and can manage the listing's locations and service areas. If you install a brand that runs a locator, keep your listing's phone number, service areas and business details current and matching your website.
Thumbtack
A marketplace where homeowners hire local service businesses, plumbers among them. Thumbtack's plugin is listed in ChatGPT's plugin directory, and its Claude integration has been live in the US since April 2026, so people can ask about home repairs and hire a professional from its marketplace without leaving the chat. If you take Thumbtack jobs, list each plumbing service you offer, with your prices and the area you cover, and keep that profile in step with your website.

Yelp
Business pages and reviews, plus quote requests to service pros. Yelp's AI assistant can start a quote request for a customer, and Yelp has added Calendly so that, after requesting a quote from a pro who uses it, a customer can pick a time from that pro's live calendar. Keep your plumbing categories, hours, service area and photos current there, and reply to quote requests quickly. Yelp asks businesses not to request reviews at all, so leave Yelp reviews to customers who choose to write one.

Rules that change the advice
Plumbing licenses are public, so publish yours
Who licenses plumbers depends on where you work, and customers can often look a license up. In Texas, for example, the State Board of Plumbing Examiners licenses master and journeyman plumbers and limited tradesman plumbers (the Tradesman Plumber-Limited license), runs a public license search, and makes the Responsible Master Plumber ensure every service vehicle shows the company name and that plumber's license number. Put the license holder's name, the license number and the issuing board on your website as text, so a customer, or an assistant checking for one, finds the same details your trucks carry.

Google's AI Mode can price-check home services
Google Search's AI Mode can research home services for a signed-in customer and check pricing and availability. It gathers what is published online, and when a business has not put the details online, Google may call it, passing on only what the customer confirmed. A plumbing company that publishes its service call fee, its after-hours rate and how soon it can usually come out answers that question before anyone dials.

Water-saving fixtures carry an EPA label, and rebates come from the water provider
WaterSense is the EPA's label for water-efficient products such as toilets, showerheads and faucets. Many WaterSense partners offer rebates on labeled products, and the EPA tells customers to ask their local water provider about one. If you install labeled fixtures, say so by name on your website, and send customers to their water provider for the rebate rather than promising one yourself.

What to fix first
Put emergency hours and coverage at the top
State near the top of every page whether you take emergency calls, on which days and at what hours, which towns you will go to after hours, and what an after-hours visit costs if it costs more. Write the phone number out in full so a customer can tap it.
Name every plumbing job you do
Give each common job its own line or page: drain cleaning, sewer line repair, water heater repair and replacement, tankless installs, repiping, leak detection, fixture installs. Add specialist work such as backflow testing or lead service line replacement if you offer it; the EPA guides water systems through inventories of service line materials so lead lines can be found and replaced, and homeowners will look for who does that work.
Make your Google Business Profile match the website
If customers never come to your shop, set up as a service-area business and list your towns or zip codes instead of an address. Choose the plumbing services Google suggests, add custom ones for the rest, set regular and holiday hours, and add your booking link, using the same job names and towns as your website.
Publish the license and insurance
Show the license holder's name, the license number, the issuing board and your insurance as text on your website, not as a photo of a certificate. Use the same details on Google, in any marketplace you take jobs from and on your trucks.
Price the routine jobs and explain the rest
Publish your service call fee, your after-hours rate and a starting price or range for routine work like clearing a drain or swapping a standard water heater, plus any financing. For a repipe or a sewer replacement, say the price follows an inspection and what that first visit costs.
Take requests online and ask for Google reviews
Add a short booking or estimate form for planned work that confirms by text or email. After each job, ask every customer in the same words for an honest Google review with nothing offered in return, and claim your Yelp and Thumbtack listings, and check your PHCC listing if you are a member, so the details match.

How can an AI agent find my plumbing company?
For a plumber, being found by an agent usually starts with an urgent question, such as who can come tonight for a backed-up drain. Google's AI Mode can check home service prices and availability for a customer, and call a business when the answer is not online. Answer the urgent question on your own pages: your emergency hours, the towns you cover after dark, your after-hours rate and a phone number that can be tapped, with the same details on your Google listing.
Do AI assistants like ChatGPT recommend plumbers?
They answer questions about local plumbing, and some connect to home services platforms. Thumbtack has a plugin in ChatGPT and an integration in Claude for hiring pros from its marketplace, plumbers included. Yelp's assistant can start a quote request with a service pro, and Google's AI Mode can research home services and check prices and availability for a customer. None of them promises to name a particular plumber. What a plumbing company controls is whether its jobs, service area, emergency hours, license and a way to book or ask for an estimate are written down clearly and read the same everywhere.
Should a plumber publish prices when every job is different?
Publish the parts that are fixed. A service call or trip fee, an after-hours rate and a starting price for routine work, such as clearing a drain or replacing a standard tank water heater, give a customer, or an AI assistant comparing plumbers for one, a real number to work with. For jobs that depend on what is behind the wall, like a repipe or a sewer line, say that the price comes after an inspection and what the inspection costs. Google's AI Mode may phone a business whose pricing is not online, so a published price can save that call.
My customers never come to my shop. What should my Google Business Profile show?
Google names plumbers as an example of a service-area business: one that goes to customers instead of serving them at its own address. If that describes you, remove the address from your profile and list the cities or zip codes you serve, up to 20 of them, keeping the whole area within about two hours' drive of your base. Then write the same towns and zip codes on your website, so a customer checking whether you come to their street gets one answer.
What license details should a plumbing company put on its website?
Write out the license holder's name, the license type and number, and the board or agency that issued it. Licensing differs by state. Texas licenses master plumbers, journeyman plumbers and Tradesman Plumber-Limited holders through its State Board of Plumbing Examiners, which runs a public license search, while California's Contractors State License Board licenses plumbing contractors under the C-36 classification. Google's screening for Local Services Ads can include a check of a plumber's state license. Your licensing board can tell you what your advertising has to show.
Can I offer a discount on the next service call for a review?
Not for Google reviews. Google does not allow businesses to offer payment, discounts, free goods or free services for a review, to discourage negative reviews, or to ask only the customers they expect to be happy. Asking customers for an honest account of their own job is allowed. Ask everyone after the job in the same words, with nothing attached. Yelp goes further and asks businesses not to request reviews at all, so leave Yelp to customers who choose to write one.
